How to Make a Ribbon Flower

how to make a ribbon flower

Start with an 18” length of ribbon. Sew a simple straight stitch along the edge, gathering loosely until you see the form and size of the flower you like.

When you have the shape as you desire, sew the ends together. In the simple round flower, match the backs of the open ends and sew along the raw edge so it faces the back of the flower and secure. Trim away excess ribbon and thread.

Explore various ribbon colors, textures and widths to create at least two more flower rounds that will fit inside the first and widest flower shape you made. Layer them together with the space in the middle, ready for the flower center.

To create a basic flower center, make a knot with a ribbon (about 5/8” or wider, depending on the space you need to fill). Tuck the loose ends into the center and through to the back.

Sew the edges of the ribbon flowers together, making sure to secure all layers, as shown in the diagram at left. Finish with a leaf-shaped piece of felt to match and hot-glue to the back of the flower. Add a pin back, ponytail holder if desired.
